FOCUS

Jesse Richman TANGLED LINES LEGENDS • Jesse Richman has a different perspective of scale to the average human when it comes to his kiting endeavors – the waves are bigger, the jumps are bigger, the risks are bigger, and perhaps the smiles are bigger too. Here’s his cross examination from others in the kiting world…

ON THE LIST ON THE LIST Pallas, Finland

Appletree Surfboards Klokhouse and Klokhouse Noseless • Appletree Surfboards come from humble beginnings on a Dutch fruit farm, and now have their own bespoke production facility in Portugal, crafting a comprehensive range of fully customizable boards. Catharina, who has done admirably on the GKA Kite-surf competition circuit over the last few years, talks us through her Appletree quiver.

KITE BEACH CAPE TOWN • Josh Gillitt hails from Cape Town where the strong winds mean he has become a fan of Big Air. Recently signed with F-ONE, he is aiming to compete at the GKA Big Air event in Tarifa in June, then the Big Air Kite League event in Brazil. We found out more about where it all started for him, first in Durban, South Africa, then Kite Beach, Cape Town.

LOVE LETTERS TO KITEBOARDING

AIMING HIGH • Posito Martinez recently visited Colombia for the first time to take part in the first GKA event ever held there, in Salinas del Rey. It’s fair to say he was an immediate fan, loving the strong wind, which is just what’s needed for training Big Air – his new favorite discipline…

FOLLOW THE WIND • The Netherlands has spawned some of the world’s best kiters with its stormy winds. But when conditions weren’t playing ball, Evan Klijn, who came second in last year’s Big Air Kite League competition in Cape Town, jumped on a plane and headed to Tarifa, the intensely windy, southernmost point of Mainland Europe.

MIKAILI SOL AND FABIO INGROSSO • Mikaili Sol, just 17 years old, is already a four-time freestyle world champion and one of the greatest talents kiting has seen in recent years. Axel Reese caught up with her in Brazil, and also spoke to her coach, six-time snowkite world champion Fabio Ingrosso. Fabio coached Mikaili and Valentin Rodriguez to their GKA world championship titles, as well as taking other top pros like Maxime Chabloz under his wing.

STUFF we like the look of

ARCTIC MONKEYS • In February, Annabel van Westerop, Joshua Emanuel, Oswald Smith, Rita Arnaus and Youri Zoon joined the Pallas Kiteweek, an annual event bringing snowkiters together in Finland. They enjoyed everything Mother Nature threw at them, and ticked quite a few things off the bucket list, including the must-see-in-your-lifetime northern lights…

Hail Mary • Photos from Spanish photographer Samuel Cardenas will often be found adorning the pages of TheKiteMag, and when he sent us some unique shots of Sergio Turégano in Tarifa we knew we had to run one as our next cover. Sergio tells us about the story and inspiration behind the money shot…

TAXI • Stig Hoefnagel heads to Cape Town most winters to make the most of the strong winds along the west coast. But sometimes a road trip is in order to experience a novelty flatwater spot and turn your preconceptions on their head. Stig and fellow Naish rider Cohan van Dijk headed to the south coast where the effects of South Africa’s divisive political legacy are still visible.
