FOCUS

TANGLED LINES LEGENDS • Mitu is one of the most legendary waveriders in kitesurfing history, having been around since kiting first started at his home spot of Sal, Cape Verde. He is the undisputed master of the notorious Ponta Preta wave there, is a pioneer of strapless freestyle, and has stood on the podium countless times. And to top it all he is internationally recognized as a super nice guy, with three kids following rapidly in his footsteps!

SAINT VINCENT and the GRENADINES • Jurre Witte and Suzanne Legtenberg are currently sailing round the world, hitting up beautiful kite spots as they go. Jurre took some time out to tell us about one. Luckily for the rest of us a sailing boat isn’t essential to get there – you can fly in instead, although the runways are a lot smaller than you might be used to…

AIRUSH CYPHER

LEUCATE • Last year Angely Bouillot was the first woman to take part in the Red Bull King of the Air in Cape Town, and she recently took part for the second time, again the only woman in the event. We asked her about her home spot of Leucate in southern France, where the Tramontana howls down from the mountains, surely a contributing factor to her Big Air prowess.

KING OF THE AIR

CAPE DOCTOR • RRD rider Carl Ferreira is lucky enough to live in Cape Town, where the wind blows regularly throughout the summer months. As well as turning the city into one of the world’s top kiting spots, it also blows away any pollution (and bad vibes they say) that would otherwise linger, and has therefore been nicknamed the Cape Doctor…

WANDERLUST • Roderick Pijls left the well-trodden path of Cumbuco and headed further north to explore the endless coastline of Brazil, search for some waves, and hit up hidden lagoons with butter-flat water for some freestyle action.

Under The Hood • FLYSURFER are amongst the front runners in the foil kite market, having released some innovative products over the years, and their team riders are currently at the front of the pack when it comes to foil racing. It’s not just foil kites though – their tube kites and board range is ever expanding and well regarded… They have just celebrated their 20th year in business, so we thought it was a good time to catch up with them.

GKA KITE WORLD TOUR • October and November were busy months on the GKA Kite World Tour, with the Kite-Surf World Cup taking place in Dakhla, Morocco, the Freestyle World Cup in Cumbuco, Brazil, and the Hydrofoil Freestyle World Cup in Fortaleza, Brazil.

GKA FREESTYLE WORLD CUP BRAZIL • 43 riders registered to compete at the second and last Kite World Tour Freestyle event of 2021. The battle for the Cumbuco podium positions was a fierce one, and there were many different possible scenarios for the World Titles. The top riders in the world gave a breath-taking performance for both the Men’s and Women’s finals.

GKA HYDROFOIL FREESTYLE WORLD CUP BRAZIL • Hydrofoil freestyle is still a relatively new discipline that is evolving rapidly and allows riders to kite at unique locations where the wind is much lighter. Fortaleza, Brazil was the ideal location for this second edition of the GKA Hydrofoil Freestyle World Championship 2021, and it was a busy week of action and incredible tricks. Each rider is really helping to push the sport further and further each season.
