FOCUS

Jack Rieder TANGLED LINES • Canadian Jack Rieder may be relatively new to the world of kiting, but he’s a bit of a shredder, with an impressive bag of tricks, and one of the few kiters who can handlepass both ways flawlessly. He is looking forward to putting more time into his main passion, park riding, and we look forward to seeing what this young rider will achieve in the future.

Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic • GKA competitor Lorenzo Calcaño hails from Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic, and lives only 350 meters from a beach called Casa Blanca where he learnt to kite. He recently signed with CrazyFly, so we thought it was a good time to find out more about him and where he got into kiting.

UNCHARTERED TERRITORY • Not far off the coast of Western Australia lie the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, 122 islands clustered into three main groups – Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert. More than 60 ships have been lost in the notoriously treacherous waters of the archipelago, but Gabi Steindl braved the trip out there and scored some sessions in an isolated place that very few kiters have ever ventured to…

CARPE DIEM • Xavier Kain helped organize the Full Power Tarifa, Big Air Kite League event last year, and by all accounts also put in an insane performance in the competition. He currently calls Tarifa home and is lucky enough to hit the water there whenever conditions are best. From the look of these photos, all that time on the water has evidently paid off…

OCEAN RODEO • Dutch Big Air warrior, Giel Vlugt, performed a stunt of historical consequence recently, becoming the first rider to do a legit kite low, double megaloop, as well as a very neat and tidy S-loop. We spoke to him to find out more, and to Richard Myerscough at Ocean Rodeo who created the ALUULA Rise kite that Giel has been riding…

Profile Raalhugudi Kite Fest • The Maldives is better known as a honeymoon destination and for its incredible natural beauty than as a kiting spot. The Raalhugudi organization, with a little help from Youri Zoon, plan to change that and put the Maldives firmly on the kiting map. Youri recently headed out there for the country’s first ever kite competition, a race held in February. We spoke to event coordinator, Kayvee..

Enter Stage Right • When Keahi de Aboitiz knows that the photographic opportunities are going to be sweet, even if that means riding unlikely breaks, he gives photographer John Bilderback a shout. And John knows that when Keahi gets an idea in his head, it’s best to go along with it. John sent through one teaser shot and that was more than enough for us to pull the trigger on this one…

Magic Moments • The northeast coast of Brazil is a path well-trodden for kiters, but every so often it’s worth reminding ourselves why it’s so popular. If you haven’t yet managed to get there, read on… Hannah Whiteley gives us the low down on some of the tops spots that she visited recently, where she bagged some awesome photos to whet your appetite and have you hitting up the credit card…

adventure CALLS • Freestyle, foiling, surfing, surf foiling, fishing, swimming with sharks, culture, hanging out with the locals and with Youri Zoon – Louka Pitot ticked a lot off the list on his...
