What’s in the air this month

Show Stoppers • With London Design Festival hovering in the wings, David Lipton raises the curtain on the season’s highlights

Paris • Ever since Louis XIV sought to make Versailles the dernier cri of grand luxury, the City of Lights has been a hot spot for gilding, cabinetry and all the noble handicrafts. The tradition lives on in contemporary design, though today’s practitioners are happy to look outward – to Japan or Venice, say – to refine their objets using exotic techniques.

Southern Nigeria • The ‘Giant of Africa’ is also a colossus of creativity – witness our profile of these four innovative artist/designers from Lagos and Nsukka. Whether reappraising indigenous crafts or alluding to historical iniquities, each draws largely on the country’s distinctive heritage, as Jareh Das reports.

Seoul • South Korea’s dynamic metropolis is a dense complex of old and new, and it’s crystallised a trove of rare gems over the years. The city’s art scene is shot through with subversions of traditional craft, strange symmetries and a real aesthetic lucidity. Here, discovers Emily Tobin, a Neo-Futurist sleight of hand feels equally at home as ancient artisanship.

Mexico City • Locals would no doubt argue that this pulsating, hyper-energetic metropolis has been ‘having a moment’ ever since Montezuma II was a wee boy. And yet, right now it does appear more happening and creative than ever before, its streets sprouting all manner of exciting artistic collaborations between friends, couples and siblings. Rodman Primack introduces a few of the faces behind this Mexican new wave.

Ode on a Grecian Yarn • With wall upon wall of hand-dyed threads and tables teeming with trimmings, this venerable Athens atelier is a paean to passementerie. Eyeing all the Technicolor tiebacks and tassels, fringes and frogging, Ben Eastham can’t help feeling poetic.

Bullion Air Buoys Club • Is your décor looking flat and earthbound? Fear not. Having surveyed the ne plus ultra in fringes, tassels and trimmings, Maude Smith has a wealth of ideas to help elevate things.

Dances with Wools • Are you poised for something wonderful underfoot? Then trip the light fantastic as we unfurl a range of de luxe rugs, from painterly to geometric. Raising the barre, Gianluca Longo throws some shapes on the floor.

Seaside Specials • Join us on a jaunt to Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast, where we’ve lined up some highly entertaining material for you – namely the latest fabrics to hit home shores this season. Thankfully, Miranda Sinclair has remembered to pack all the essentials, from chintz parasols to hound’s-tooth windbreaks and deckchair stripes. That’s the way to do it!

It is Written (on) • Take it as gospel that a fine desk will encourage you to put pen to paper. From a Gothic Revival chapel in London, Gianluca Longo spreads the word.

Penne for Your Thoughts • Pasta, that old faithful, never fails to please, whether it’s a simple scratch supper or an indulgent 13-egg – yes, really! – extravaganza to impress friends. But before you put a pan on to boil, Daisy Garnett would like a word in your shell-like…

Share Capital • Be it ditalini or devilled kidneys, divvy up your victuals from stylish vessels. Dig in, says...
