The World of Interiors

EDITOR’S LETTER • AUGUST 2022

antennae news • What’s in the air this month, by David Lipton

antennae roundup • If your current trunk feels like excess baggage, David Lipton has some stand-up stand-ins to get off his chest…

THE HEAT IS ON • If your fabrics are no longer raising the temperature, why not make these lush, steamy designs a tropic of conversation? Pictured at the storied Cobblers Cove in Barbados, they’re fishy and floral, sultry and submarine – in short, hot stuff.

RIGHT TIME, RIGHT PLAICE • Seasonal, sustainable and simple to prepare, one fish in particular deserves a starring role in more light suppers at this time of year. Whether served with a salsa verde or the merest squeeze of lemon, a beurre blanc or a dollop of mayo, its glistening white fillets become utterly delectable – if you follow the foolproof method shared with Daisy Garnett by a culinary great. So what’s the catch? There really isn’t one, she says.

table • Trawling the net for the best fish-themed tableware? Let David Lipton tip the scales in your favour

LOVE LETTERS • With its ritzy hotels and dramatic vistas, Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany has long been a draw for well-to-do Italian families. The resort also attracts a different type of visitor, fontophiles drawn to the quirky signage beach clubs use to announce themselves. From wooden to neon, all caps to cursive, they’re character-driven delights.

books • Built from bamboo and Buddhism

SLIM’S PICKINGS • When Slim Aarons was done with war photography, he was quick to reinvent himself, finding a rich seam to mine – a Croesus-rich seam – in the manicured gardens of moneyed families. His 1974 book, A Wonderful Time, shows the snapper at his best and all those socialites and lounger lizards at their most carefree, writes Mitchell Owens

network • Sophia Toce chooses the best merchandise and events worldwide

SERIOUS pursuits • Auctions, antique fairs and diverting activities, chosen by Ariadne Fletcher

VISITORS’ BOOK

RAJMATAZZ • Follow the old camel road out of Jaipur towards Agra and you’ll soon find the Pink City takes on an altogether ruddier tone. Scarlet sun loungers, awnings, parasols and jazzy chevron stripes signal that you’ve arrived at Villa Palladio, a fantastical new hotel conjured up by three of the most accomplished alchemists in the game. Surveying all that saturated colour, Cosmo Brockway thought this former palace couldn’t possibly get any – ahem – madder. Then he stepped inside…

HOLY CRAPS • At first sight of the astonishing Casino de Madeira rising up like a crown of thorns in concrete, visitors to Funchal might well express a certain wonder. Studying its form – so reminiscent of the Cathedral of Brasília – they might even bet good money on the great Oscar Niemeyer having a hand in proceedings. And they’d be correct – to a point, for others too had a stake in it. Credit where it’s due, says Oliver Basciano, they played their cards just right.

PIROGUES GALLERY • The harbour of Mbour, Senegal’s third-largest fishing community, announces itself in a riot of bobbing colour. Painted by their owners with suns, geometrical symbols and stylised national flags, hundreds of these canoe-like pirogues line the water’s edge, testament to a vibrant culture that’s been passed down...
